13+ Choosing your subjects

Are you in Year 8 or Year 9 and thinking about which subjects to take?

Up until now you and your friends will have probably studied the same subjects - but during year 8 or 9 you'll have to choose what YOU want to study next.

The core group of subjects you will be able to work towards a qualification in are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Functional Skills

What are Functional Skills?

  • Functional Skills are the practical skills of English, maths and information and communication technology (ICT).
  • Everyone needs these skills - as they are the essential skills you will use in everyday life, in learning and at work.
  • You will be able to study them as part of the new Diploma, your English, maths and ICT GCSEs, or as separate Functional Skills qualifications.

The subjects you will also have to continue studying at school – some of which you may be able to take a qualification in are:

  • Careers education
  • Citizenship
  • Physical education
  • Religious studies
  • Sex and relationship education
  • Work-related learning
All your other subjects will be optional and will include a range of subjects and courses. Your school will be able to tell you the number of optional subjects you can choose and what's on offer.
When you are looking at which courses to study, think about:
  • Are there any subjects you enjoy and are good at?
  • Whether you prefer course work or exams - as some courses may have more course work
  • Your future career plans. Where do you want to end up - will this course help to take you there?
  • Whether you would like to ‘mix and match’ more than one course - for example one of the new Diplomas with your GCSE subjects

If you'd like more help in making a decison about about the subjects don't forget you can always ask for advice from your teachers or Personal Adviser.

There's also the Which Way Now website with lots more information about Y8 / Y9 choices.
