Employment Laws For Young People

The youngest a child is allowed to work is 13 years old. The type of work children can do is governed by rules from the 'Protection of Young People at Work'. This states that Local Authorities (LAs) must keep a list of jobs that are suitable for 13-year olds. A 13-year old cannot do a job that isn't on this list.

Children may not work:

  • If they are less than 13 years old (exceptions can be made if a child is involved with theatre productions or light agricultural/horticultural work for their parents)
  • For more than one hour before school
  • During school hours
  • Before 7.00am or after 7.00pm
  • Without an employment permit issued by the Local Authority (LA)

Employers must inform the LA if they employ a school-age child. If the LA believes the arrangements for work are satisfactory, they will issue the child with an employment permit. If employers don't do this your son or daughter may not be covered by their employers insurance!

Children may work:

  • For 2 hours maximum on school days and Sundays
  • For 5 hours maximum on Saturdays (13-14 year olds) or 8 hours (15-16 year olds)
  • For 12 hours maximum per week

During school holidays:

  • Children must have a two-week break from any work
  • Young people may work for up to 5 hours (13-14 year olds) or 8 hours (15-16 year olds) on weekdays
  • Young people may work a maximum of 25 hours (13-14 year olds) or 35 hours (15-16 year olds) per week
