Making The Right Choice
Here are a few points to consider when discussing your son/daughter's choices at 16:
An increasing number of young people in the Black Country are choosing to stay on in education or enter work-based learning programmes. The number entering employment has dropped significantly over the last few years.
Training and qualifications have a very important role. The demand for skills in the workplace is growing, with employers placing more and more importance on things like key skills (such as IT and communication) and relevant workplace experience. Further training or qualifications will improve your son/daughter's chances in later life.
Training and qualifications can be gained through either full-time education or work-based learning.
Employment doesn't mean an end to gaining qualifications - part-time/flexible study outside of work is an option, and in some cases young people may be entitled to paid time off for study or training.
You might find it useful to look at the money facts for further education section to find out what your son/daughter might be entitled to if they continue studying.
